I visited Guangzhou twice in 1978. The first time was in the Spring, when I went into China for the very first time. I was with my fellow American students from Taiwan. It was incredibly exciting to make it into China during these early days of the Open Door policy, especially for those of us coming from Taiwan.

　　The next time was in December, when I went there with my parents and brother, who had rendezvous'ed with me in Hong Kong. This was one of the greatest trips our family had ever taken. The day we arrived in Guangzhou, the news broke that the U.S. and China were establishing normal diplomatic relations and that Deng Xiaoping would be visiting America. Everywhere we went, Chinese people were happy to tell us the news.

　　It was also interesting that at this time, there were still some protest posters (大 字 报） on the walls of buildings, co-inciding with the Democracy Wall in Beijing.

　　我于1978年两度访问广州.第一次是在春天,我和我的美国学生破天荒的首次从台湾来到了中国.在改革开放政策稍前来到中国,我们带着一种难以置信的兴奋,尤其是对我们这些来自台湾的美国人来说.

　　第二次是在12月,我和父母,兄弟在香港会合.这是当时我们全家人最棒的一次旅行,当我们来到广州,有消息传出,美国和中国即将建立正常外交关系,并认为邓小平将访问美国.我们到处去,无论我们去哪,中国人都很高兴的告诉我们这个消息 .
